Much of Leyton was built in a rush of terraced housing in the late nineteenth century, and those streets between the High Road and the Lea Valley still make up most of the area. Many of the houses have since been converted into upper and lower flats, or given kitchen extensions and loft bedrooms, often on top of the original drains. Newer flats along Lea Bridge Road and near Leyton station add pressurised systems and managed blocks to the mix.
While you wait
It's usually under the kitchen sink, near where the supply pipe comes into the property. Turn it clockwise. In flats it may be in a cupboard, under the bath or in the hallway.
If water is near sockets, switches or light fittings, switch off the power at the consumer unit, but only if you can reach it without standing in water.
Once the stopcock is off, run the cold taps to empty the pipes and flush the toilets. This takes pressure off the leak.
Put buckets and towels under drips and move valuables. If a ceiling is bulging with water, keep people out from underneath it.

FAQs
Call us and we'll talk you through where to look while the engineer is on the way. In flats, the stopcock is sometimes in a communal riser, so building management may be able to help.
No. There is no emergency surcharge. You pay the call-out rate for the time of day the engineer arrives (daytime, evening and weekend, or night and bank holiday), the same as any other visit in that band.
Travel within the area we cover, attendance, diagnosis and the first 60 minutes of work. After that, time is charged in 30-minute blocks at the extra-time rate for the same band. Parts are extra, and the engineer confirms the price before fitting anything.
No. Nothing beyond the first hour goes ahead unless you agree to it. If parts need ordering, the return visit to fit them has no second call-out charge. You only pay for the time on site.
