How charges work

No surprises

Included in the call-out charge: Travel within the area we cover, attendance, diagnosis and the first 60 minutes of work.
After the first hour: Time is charged in 30-minute blocks at the extra-time rate for the same band.
Which band applies: The band is set by the time the engineer arrives, and the whole visit is charged at that band.
No emergency surcharge: An emergency costs the same as any other call-out in the same band. You pay for the time of day, not the word "emergency".
Parts: Charged on top. Common parts are carried on every van, and the engineer confirms the price before fitting anything.
Extra work: Nothing beyond the first hour goes ahead without your agreement.

How we fix it

1Lifts the manholes along the run to see which chambers are full and which are empty, which shows where the blockage sits
2Clears it by rodding from the nearest chamber, or by jetting where grease, silt or scale is involved
3Tells you whether the blockage is on your private drain or the public sewer, so you know who is responsible
4Confirms the price of any parts, and checks with you before going beyond the first hour of drainage work at Rate B
5Runs water through the line to check it flows freely, and recommends a CCTV survey if it looks likely to block again

Before the engineer arrives

Stop using taps, showers and toilets that drain into the blocked run, and don't flush if the water is already rising.
If you know where your manholes are, clear any plant pots or furniture off them so the engineer can lift the covers.

Blocked drains: your questions

Who pays if the blockage is in the public sewer?

Blockages in a public sewer or a shared drain beyond your boundary are usually the water company's to clear, which in South East and East London is normally Thames Water. The engineer can show you where the blockage sits.

Will rodding be enough, or does it need jetting?

Rods work well on wipes, paper and other soft blockages close to a chamber. Grease, silt and scale built up along the pipe walls usually need jetting to scour them away.

What causes drains to block?

Wipes, fat poured down the kitchen sink, nappies and sanitary products are the most common causes. Tree roots and cracked or sunken pipes can also catch waste and lead to repeat blockages.

Is there an emergency surcharge?

No. An emergency costs the same as any other call-out in the same time band. You pay for the time of day, not the word "emergency".
